Wandering Camera – Thistles

Scottish Thistle Watercolour | Whims And Fancies

Welcome to this month’s Wandering Camera.

Thistles are not what one would necessarily call very pretty flowers.  They are a wild sort that grows on invasive thorny plants.  Yet the fuchsia colour is undeniably vibrant and beautiful enough for me to seek out and photograph them, and paint them afterwards as well.

A few months ago, on our third road trip in Scotland, I was looking forward to spotting and photographing them on walking trails.  I found quite a few variations of the flower in different areas.

I hope you enjoy this set of my photos of wild thistles.

This is the only one that I photographed in a garden.

I took this photo by the mountainside, bracing myself against 40 – 50 mph wind gusts.  Considering the effort it took me to take this photo, I feel I brought a bit of the Scottish spirit back with me!

Thistles are not grand, but definitely tough, wild, and have a strong aptitude for survival.  This little prickly weed has not only got the status of being the national flower of Scotland, it has also placed itself in different varieties of stylised art.

I too have succumbed to the magic of thistle.  Hope you enjoyed the photos!

Wandering Camera – Woodland Walk

Northern California Woodland Walk | Whims And Fancies

Welcome to the very first revival of Wandering Camera – a monthly photography linky party.

There are trails that meander through the forest in the mountains about 27 miles from our home.  By late spring the area becomes hot and arid, but during the winter months it turns into a lush green woodland.  The rainwater then brings beautiful early spring wild flowers.   I love to walk amongst these trees, specially on cloudy days or closer to twilight.

I find the forest eerie, but at the same time the trees make it a safe place to hide and explore.

A few months ago, I wanted to spend the wintry morning of my birthday walking on one those forest trails in the mountains leaving the small adjacent town below.  Trees dominate the landscape, but a closer look always reveals so much more.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I love to photograph forests and trees, they inspire me to create.  I had previously shared this favourite poem of mine, Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening, written by Robert Frost.  I hope you will indulge my wanting to share the poem here once again.
