Purchase Summer Sailboat Pattern
I took a break last week to catch my breath a little, and it was quite nice to be able to do that. During that time I worked on a few hand sewing finishes. The Summer Sailboat was amongst them. I wanted to add to the paper pieced block with hand quilting. Large fluffy clouds are always a favourite of mine and my husband. I started there and added on as I went along with the quilting.
A couple of months ago, we went to the Point Reyes National Seashore. We don’t live by the ocean, but it is a very nice day trip for us. Sadly, we only go once every few years. We had never been to Point Reyes before, and I needed to learn my new camera that I got earlier this year. So we decided to drive out and make a day of it. After having a delicious seafood lunch at one of the many small seaside towns en route, we arrived at Point Reyes.
It was a cool, windy day. Although a bit hazy, you could still see the bay in the distance.
The colour of the water makes me think of glass. I could have stood there forever, watching the water crashing into those rocks creating frothy white foam. Different every time!
The call of the ocean. I always feel a strong pull whenever I see the vast expanse of the sea, wondering what’s on the other side.
The ever-present stiff gale has bent all the trees, creating a canopy.
There are wonderful sitting grooves on the thick branches of this lovely tree. Sitting in one of those was like being hugged by a tree.
The marine mist rolled in at the end of the day. The contrasting white of the breaking waves against the blue-grey is beautiful.
I love the pale and soft pastel purple, peach and cream colours of sunsets even more than the bright ones, they feel very serene and peaceful to me. It was time to head home.
This was the first outside trip for my new camera and it was a wonderful one at that. I hope to create many more memories with it.
I set out to quilt the little wall hanging with that ocean blue colour in mind.
Purchase Summer Sailboat Pattern
The finished Summer Sailboat quilted wall hanging. There was another quilted square on the border, but it looked crowded, so I removed it in the end. This one is my very first all hand-quilted finish. I could have been done with it a bit sooner if I didn’t always get hung up on the stitch sizes being almost same all the time, but I am glad I took the time to work on it.
The Summer Sailboat quilt pattern is in my shop should you wish to make one. I hope you enjoyed the photos and my little finish. I will tell you a bit more about this one and a couple of companion quilted wall hangings another day.

I am also linking up with the linky parties on my Events And Links page. They are fun to visit and great source for new inspirations.

What a beautiful place. Living in landlocked South Yorkshire we usually only have daytrips to the coast when we go to visit my parents. I love the way the wind has shaped the tree.

I love the beach! Your seaside photos look great and make me wish I was there. The sailboat block is fabulous! The hand quilting adds just the right touch.

Lovely!! Your hand quilting is the perfect complement for your piecing and choice of fabric. I enjoyed your pictures of the ocean. Being alongside of a body of water is my happy place even though I, too, live inland. Your photos really capture the mesmerizing view.

A great sailboat, I love your quilting on it! And great beach pics, nothing nicer than rugging up on a cool windy day and going to the beach! Thanks for sharing with ‘sew stitch snap SHARE’

Your hand quilting works so well with the waves, wind and sailboat!
Point Reyes is a gorgeous area, all times of the year and in all seasons. The light off the Pacific Coast is something hard to define
but the magic and thrill is real.
Your photos caught some of that.

Oh my! You have to go to the ocean more often. This place is beautiful. I have never been but it is on my list. #OurWorldTuesday

I have to agree about the ocean–it’s always fabulous and takes my breath away. The tree is very cool as, although I see pines that are windblown, I have never seen any that close to the sea. Your quilt square is just lovely!

I try to go to Point Reyes at least once a year, we don’t live too far from there. It’s one place I wouldn’t tire of visiting.

Beautiful seashore shots, and I love the tree! What a couple of wonderful sailboat quilt squares, also.
Ruth August 14, 2017 at 12:23
My favourite spaces are those by the sea. This evokes that feeling perfectly!

Thank you much for taking us with you to Point Reyes so we at All Seasons can experience it too – these views of the shore line, the canope trees, the clouds, bring back the breeze of the ocean, the salt in the air, the sound of crashing waves – so relaxing, I want to go too! Your memory caught in a quilting piece is lovely!Have a beautiful week:)

Fort Bragg was our summer retreat spot each year but since the Mr. fell ill, we haven’t been up there. Thank you for posting such wonderful images of the North Coast.

Dixie August 12, 2017 at 18:36
Love your sailboat and your hand quilting.
What a wonderful place! The trees are characters n themselves.
I think I can smell the salty breeze and feel the magic of the sea.
I hope you get to go to the seaside more often, Soma.
Kim Sharman August 12, 2017 at 01:06
Your Summer Sailboat is lovely, Soma. Love those perfect quilting stitches. =) Those trees are awesome. I love how the winds have, over time, formed such amazing shapes and contorted forms. I too, would love to sit in those trees and be hugged whilst looking at those beautiful seaside views. Your seaside photos are amazing.

You learned to use your new camera really fast – those photos are stunning! Your little sailboat is so cute. I think you made the right decision hand quilting it!
Debbie August 11, 2017 at 09:33
Your pics are beautiful–and I love how simple stitching sets off a block like your sailboat!!
Jayne August 11, 2017 at 09:09
This is a beauty! You captured the movement of the clouds beautifully! Love the hand stitching, those kind of details are always so nice! Your photos are beautiful as well. I think I could sit and watch the ocean all day, every day! There’s a peacefulness that takes over and is so relaxing!
Roseanne August 11, 2017 at 06:45
Hi Soma,
Oh my, what a beautiful wall hanging. The quilting absolutely makes this quilt come to life. You can almost see the wind in the sails and feel the waves on the sea. Your photos are great, too! The one that really strikes a note with me is the beach with the waves rolling in – the contrast between the damp sand and the water, with the sky kind of dark yet light in patches. Oooh, that is just too beautiful. ~smile~ Roseanne

Beautiful! I felt the breeze when I saw that sailboat!
RobynLouise August 11, 2017 at 01:36
Perfect quilting! It looks like gentle summer breezes guiding your little yacht through the waves :).
Janine @ Rainbow Hare August 11, 2017 at 00:55
Your sail boat block looks great and I love the way you’ve hand quilted it :)
It sounds like a very inspirational and peaceful day at the ocean. Your photos really capture both its vastness the ever-changing colours and wave and foam patterns. And the trees are amazing. They demonstrate very beautifully the power of nature :)
Mary August 10, 2017 at 19:25
Your hand quilting on it is just spot on and perfect! I loved seeing your photos from Point Reyes. It is such a spectacular spot to visit. Is that one of the local Cypress trees? I always love how they hang onto the cliffs. It is amazing how they can take root in such daunting soils.
BillieBee August 10, 2017 at 11:29
Just so lovely. I got my copy. Now to find time to make it….grin.
Cheryl Brickey August 10, 2017 at 10:40
What a beautiful design and I loved the details the hand quilting added.
Alycia August 10, 2017 at 09:27
THose trees tho!!! wow – what a beautiful place! what kind of camera did you get? ( I feel like I have asked that before…. but I claim summer)
Kim August 10, 2017 at 08:58
This looks wonderful, Soma, and what a beautiful part of the coastline. I’m one of those people who actually prefer beaches on stormy, atmospheric days, I think the colours and the physical force of the weather on the water really appeal to me.
Paige @ Quilted Blooms August 10, 2017 at 08:55
What a great sailboat and I love the hand quilting in the sails and clouds! And LOVE the ocean photos!
Susan August 10, 2017 at 07:45
Your hand quilting looks perfect to me and it is just right for your little sailboat. I love the ocean (any body of water actually) and could sit all day and watch the action. My hubby is beginning to see the wonder and beauty in the clouds that I see.
krislovesfabric August 10, 2017 at 06:21
I love those trees, so gorgeous…wonder how old they are? Your quilting was just the perfect touch to your pretty sailboat – and your hand quilting stitches are so neat and orderly, I still haven’t practiced enough to achieve that, mine often look like they are stairsteps or dancing a wild jig.
Carol S. August 10, 2017 at 05:00
The sailboat turned out even more beautiful with your quilting added to it. Gorgeous photos!
