California has been home to us for the last 13 years and I fall in love with her more with every passing day. I had to make something that represents spring in California. Wildflower season here is brilliant but brief. My first idea was to make a California Poppy.
Then I remembered how we have to be ever so careful while driving when we go to the Sierra Mountains in Spring because of the little bear cubs. They suddenly dash out in front of the car from the mountainside and run across the road toward the river. Sometimes you can see them sitting on the mountainside like big teddy bears. So cute! Of course you don’t approach them, but it is wonderful to see them in their habitat. I had to make a little bear cub!
This 12″ little bear cub quilt pattern is now available in my shop.
You can also make a brown bear from this pattern. I hope you enjoy making this block as much as I did!

Just finished this block… It looks pretty good! I’m hindsight I would have used a more coordinating thread since the seams get thick and it shows a little. Also I would not have scaled it down… And I would have chosen an easier design to try for the first time! Haha talk about a crash course!

I wanted to make the Bear Cub block, but I can’t find the directions. I have downloaded the pattern. I am new to paper piecing, so I defiantly need directions. Could you help me? Love this cute cub!
Thanks, Kelli

[…] Since I live in the forest, I have a thing for the furry residents around here. I wonder if the bears would appreciate this Bear Cub from Whims and Fancies. […]

This is adorable and perfect for something I’m planning for my mum and dad. I am desperately looking for a koala bear similar to this for a baby quilt I’m trying to design.
I’ve only ever made one quilt before (just finished Jennifer’s Project of Doom Potter quilt) so I’m not quite there yet on designing the pieces myself. Getting there, but struggling still.
Have you seen or want to design a koala bear? (happy to pay)

Wow. I continue to be amazed at the pp blocks being created. I never, ever realized how much detail could be obtained with paper piecing. What an adorable bear.

I love paper piecing for that exact reason!! Thank you so much for liking my little one :)

Wow!!! What a super SUPER block…such detail!!!! Great job Soma…and he (or maybe it’s a she…I didn’t want to look THAT close-lol)…reminds me a little of my MUCH younger days when my sweet Mom and Dad and me would take a little Sunday drive to the NH White Mtns…there was a place that had “little” black bears (long before the days of PETA).
Soma Acharya April 20, 2013 at 00:13
Thank you Lynn! I am not sure about him/her either, I better not go too close either! LOL!! That is so sweet this little one reminded you of your childhood! Touched my heart :)
Hugs!
