Purchase Sunburst Star Pattern
Stars make everything bright and beautiful. That’s probably why we keep using stars in our quilts. Sunburst Star was a specially-requested pattern. Since the day I made it and sent it off, I wanted to make this block for myself. I had a pretty clear idea about the colours, and I was very happy to find all the right fabrics in my stash. Although I am not very fond of batik prints, I bought the outer fabric because it makes me think of nebulas and stars.
I made the pattern for a 14″ piece to make it easier to sew. As I was drafting the pattern, quite by serendipity, the little tips got added to the inner star. The person I made it for was happy with the changes, but they can be completely ignored for simpler piecing.
This block was my One Monthly Goal link-up for July. During this busy summer I am glad to have finished it early. Now I can link up at the end of the month!
Purchase Sunburst Star Pattern
Of course, I had to play with the colours a little. I changed the inner and outer stars to have one or two colour combinations. Add the tips to them and you get even more variety! The Sunburst Star quilt pattern is available in my shop. I currently have only one handmade bag that fits my iPad, so I will be making another bag with this star block.
Purchase Starlight Diverging Pattern
The second star is courtesy of Sara Lynn. She made this block using my Starlight Diverging pattern. The fabrics she used are satin, taffeta, brocade and raw silk.
Sarah Lynn is an exquisite quilter, I just had to include this close-up photo of the quilting. You can see the finished project here at her website, Sarah Lynn Quilting. Make sure to browse a little to admire her lovely applique and quilting work.
I also have a giveaway winner from the Harry Potter QAL introductory post. Lori Smanski is the winner of this little bundle. Congratulations!!! I will email you shortly.
I decided not to pursue any outside sponsors for this event and fully sponsor it myself. I will do a couple more giveaways along the way, so there will be other chances to win. Make sure to follow and play along.
I will see you on July 18th for the 12 Days Of Christmas in July Blog Hop! Check out Sarah’s page for the list of participants. The blog hop started today. There are lots of wonderful ideas there that you will not want to miss.
Have a crafty week,
-Soma

Those little tips are my favorite part of your pattern. They really do sparkle!

Very cool star. I like the little tips.

Your star really sparkles with those tiny glints, a beautiful adaptable pattern. I would never get tired of it. Sarah Lynn’a block is a work of art with the fabrics and the quilting. I have an antique silk star done at the time of the crazy quilt craze and it just flows also, but with some shredding of the silks.

Very beautiful Soma! The tiny tips on the inner star are a lovely touch. I too like the nebula like background.
I can’t even imagine how Sara Lynn was able to make Starlight Diverging with satins and silks. It’s amazing!

Oh what a beautiful star you have created.

These stars are AMAZING! I love that little twinkle on the inside star tips.

Stunning & a very clever pattern! I had never thought about it, but if you want to use those beautiful silks & satins, paper piecing would be the way to go. Seeing Sarah Lynn’s work I did a double-take!

Another beautiful block – I really like those tiny pieces on the tips and the colours, which remind me of irises.

Paper piecing in satin and silk! What an amazing version of your beautiful block :)

I think you’re right; stars do make everything bright and beautiful. I’m not a fan of batiks either, though I like your background fabric. A lovely friend gifted me a small bundle of batiks that are very pretty, so I guess I like some batiks! I have marked my calendar for the quilt a long and am looking forward to it!

I am sitting here and scratching my brainpan thinking “how on earth do you design AND STITCH these incredible patterns”!! I bow down to you, lovely Soma…just incredible! Your Sunburst block is so very clever. Those tiny pieces for the tips are unbelievable! Never has an ipad had such a glorious cover. Oh how amazing is Sarah Lynn’s block is….’tis a vision splendid in all those ‘silky’ fabrics. I am going to hop over to see her work…..I have a feeling it might just set my heart ‘aracing’!!

Both of these are very pretty. Love the variations on the Sunburst Star.

I love your new block Soma. And Sara Lynn’s block is beautiful!! I imagine it is difficult to quilt on slippery fabric like that. I will check out her blog next.
Mary July 14, 2016 at 13:03
Yeah….you did it and it turned out beautifully. I like those tiny little pieces in there. I think it really adds to the design. That satin star looks great too. She did a wonderful job with that fabric.
I’m looking forward to your Christmas post.

Sunburst Star is a pretty block… and even more beautiful when it comes to life in your fabrics!
I like that you can add or omit sections for lots of variety with the pattern.
Sarah Lynn’s Starlight Diverging pillow is gorgeous!
